A recent real bribe story...

Tamil Nadu government apparently distributed DA arrears to State Government retired employees recently. A good gesture especially in view of the upcoming தமிழ் வருடப்பிறப்பு (Tamil New Year) on 13th April 2012.

The twist in the story is - while distributing the arrears to old pensioners, the guys who distribute such money have been unabashedly taking bribes.

My friend's father-in-law, a 82 year old frail gentleman, who was in a senior position while in service had to pay Rs. 5,000 to collect his arrears of Rs. 82,000.

This is downright disgusting.

Imagine if there are 10,000 such pensioners and if these culprits take Rs. 5,000 from each one of them, these thieves are making a cool money of Rs. 5 crores!

When do these bandits stopping looting these old pensioners (actually their ex-colleagues)?

How this malaise can be stemmed? Don't these guys have moral?

Do we need an Anna Hazare for this?

Yeah, when we have Anna Hazare pointing out such corruption at lower levels, the same culprits participate as if they are white like swans and point at big money swindlers.

I am ashamed to hear about this. Shame on you cheats who steal money from old pensioners.

My suggestion to stem this malaise would be to make it mandatory for all the departments to transfer these amounts automatically to the bank accounts of the pensioners.

This could have happened to our fathers/mothers and our grandfathers/mothers. No need to wait for an angel to raise these issues. After reading this post if you felt what happened was wrong, please share this on your networks. Lets build a pressure group and such group can only emerge from the Internet.

  2. Until there is some strict code of punishment, such as punishment, salary deductions etc, there will be no change. It is being done in case of passport issuing but needs to be taken to other segments too.

    1. Dear TheYoungBigmouth, thanks for your comments. Youngsters like you should awaken and inform your network and circles as this could have happened to our fathers, mothers, grandfathers, grandmothers. Also this malaise is not just limited to Tamil Nadu state and not just to state government.

  5. Corruption is the bane of Indian society. I work for a non profit and every day of my life come across people who are denied of entitlements simply because they are unable to bribe. The poor labourer in NREGA pays Rs 20 to get his Rs 100 -imagine!! But on the whole based on my experience I can say that corruption in TN is slightly better than in the rest of the country ( not an excuse I know)- wherever the poverty and vulnerability is more we will be exploited!!!

    1. Very well said Meera. In my view corruption cannot be analysed in terms of more or less. It should be decimated with roots. Thanks for stopping by and giving your feedback. Much appreciated.

  6. very true sir. Its important to stymie this menace at every level. Recently Punjab government has adapted e-pension scheme, I'm sure more will follow and since such corruption dont benefit the political parties directly,so they might not be hesitant to adapt e-pension scheme...

    1. Thanks Nitin for your additional inputs. Precisely I was hinting similar such thing in my post as well. If the pensioners choose to receive their dues via electronic modes diretly into their savings account most of the corruptions issues around that will disappaer, hopefully.

  7. this is such a malaise in our country. Lower bureaucracy is most corrupt and imagine the poor people who always face problem to get their work done. Such level of corruption is very disturbing...

    1. Thanks Rajnish for stopping by. Lower level or mid level or higher level, corruption is rampant and deep rooted. We all need to create these pressure groups to start exemplifying these shameless acts such that those involved hopefully realise that they are being watched and talked about to see some transformation. I am still hopeful.

    1. I know Ashwini, how you are feeling...instead of relying on God to do something all of us should start educating our own circles on how to curtail this menace...

  10. Well, this proves one thing. Inspite of so many people getting caught on camera taking bribes, the Anna Hazare Movement, things are going back to their normal ways. I don't think this is a short term solution to this problem that has accumulated over the years.

Solutions are available, sadly, our political parties won't apply such hard pressing laws, for fear of losing their vote banks.
